Should you Supplement?
By Coach Neil Williams

A constant question I get from many types of people is whether or not they should supplement. First let me just clarify my perspective.
If you consume:
•Breakfast Cereal
•Orange Juice
•Sports Drinks (e.g. PowerAde, Gatorade)
•Bread
•Milk
•Any packaged good
Then you are consuming a supplement.
So the question becomes should you take any additional supplements. The best way to answer this question is to keep a food journal for a few days and look it over with a coach. However here are a few insights I can give you:
1) If you are eating is mostly junk, you don’t need supplements. You need to eat healthier.
2) If you are not eating anywhere from 5-10 pieces of fruit or veggies each day, you don’t need a supplement. You need to eat better.
3) If there is very little protein or healthy fats in your journal, that’s right you guessed it, you need to eat healthier.
Supplements are not magic pills or powders giving instant results. Nor are they evil drug compounds being made in 3rd world sinks …well most of them aren’t.
They are isolated aspects of nutrition to help fill in the blanks or “supplement” healthy eating habits. Nothing more, nothing less. That said, there are supplements I recommend for most people, yes. And I will explain those select few in future articles.
