“I speak two languages, Body and English.” – Mae West

I love this Mae West quote – and I love Mae West. I remember her from my childhood – an older women who was unapologetically brash and sexy. In fact, as I think about it, older sex sirens have always impacted me on an intimate level. Who could resist the sassiness of Josephine Baker; the tempestuous Eartha Kitt; the classic sex appeal of Lena Horne or the in-your-face feminine defiance of Tina Turner? These divas continued to nurture their sensuality into their seasoned years. Somehow, it always made sense to me that the older you got, the sexier you were allowed to be, because with age came ownership.

But again, I march to the beat of a different drummer, and many folk seem to think that exuding your sex appeal over the age of 50 is somewhat of an anomaly. Granted, as a publicist working in the entertainment business, I have always had the luxury of being a free spiritpwn 2, not restricted by the confines of conventional and corporate life. Having worked with and represented some of the industry’s top talent and celebrities, my artistic sensibilities never bothered them.

But, I have to laugh as I think about it, because when I started pole dancing and posting my images on social media, even my peers just weren’t ready. I heard rumors that I was going through a ‘mid-life crisis’ or perhaps suffering from some sort of ‘breakdown.” There is something about a woman in her fifties, hanging upside down on a pole that is just mindboggling I guess!

So ladies, be forewarned, should you decide to take up pole dancing – the power of the pole is real. It will call to you in a very real way if you allow it. It will find that luscious, feminine spark buried deep within you and unfurl her for the world to witness. You will become mother earth and the pole will be the axis that centers you, spins you and grounds you in a very real way.

It is the kind of liberation that may unsettle many around you. Why? Because when your inner goddess is unleashed, your Pandora’s box of jewels are laid bare – and that kind of raw beauty can initially be blinding. But don’t worry, you will eventually get over yourself, and when you do, everybody else will follow. And if they don’t, you won’t care!

And yes, the pole, the dance, the movement can be and is sexual and sensual because as women we are inherently sexual beings. And there is no shame in that truth, only power. Mae West knew it. Audrey Hepburn knew it. Dorothy Dandridge knew. Marilyn Monroe knew it. Diana Ross knows it. Chaka Khan knows it. Angela Bassett knows it. And dammit, I know it too.

And I will not make apologies for my power, for my sexiness, for my femininity or for my innate knowledge of it. Something about hitting your 50’s – you get to ask yourself, if not now, then when? My inner goddess has been waiting my entire life for me to get here so that I could fully know and embrace her. And if I don’t love her now, first and foremost, then who will?

I love this thing we call aging. In actuality, I am the earth and like the earth, I am not aging at all. The pole is my axis, and together, we make worlds spin. And this life is my play ground. Ha!

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs? – Maya Angelou

That said, let’s dance dammit !

Blessings ~
